Check Engine Light Diagnostics in Chattanooga
A parts store will scan your code for free and hand you a printout that says P0420. That code names a symptom, not a broken part, and buying a catalytic converter off it is how people spend $1,200 to fix a $40 sensor.
- ASE-certified technicians
- 12-month / 12,000-mile nationwide warranty on covered work
- CarFax Top-Rated Service Center, 6 years running
Sounds familiar?
- The check engine light is on steady
- The light is flashing, which means stop driving and call now
- The car runs fine but the light will not go away
- It failed emissions or you have a test coming up
- Rough idle, hesitation, or a drop in fuel economy
- The light comes on, clears itself, then comes back
The free scan tells you which system is unhappy. Diagnostics tell you why. Those are different jobs, and only one of them keeps you from replacing a part that was working fine.
A flashing check engine light is the one that matters right now. It usually means a misfire is dumping raw fuel into the exhaust, which can destroy a catalytic converter in a short drive. Steady light, you have time. Flashing light, get it looked at today.
If you have the work done here, the diagnostic time goes toward the repair. Every repair carries the 12-month, 12,000-mile warranty on covered work.
Check Engine Light Diagnostics questions we get a lot
Is the check engine light scan really free?
Yes. Pulling the stored codes costs you nothing. Tracing the fault to its actual cause is diagnostic work, and we quote that up front once we know what the codes point at.
Can I keep driving with the check engine light on?
If it is on steady and the car drives normally, you have time to get it looked at this week. If it is flashing, or you notice a loss of power, shaking, or strange smells, stop driving it. A flashing light usually means an active misfire that can wreck the catalytic converter.
Why did the light come back after the code was cleared?
Clearing a code erases the record, not the fault. The computer runs its self-test again over the next several drive cycles and sets the code once more when it sees the same problem. That is why we fix the cause instead of resetting the light.
Will this help me pass an emissions test?
An illuminated check engine light is an automatic failure, and so are incomplete readiness monitors from a recently cleared code. We diagnose the fault, repair it, and let the monitors complete so the vehicle passes on its own merits.
